WHAT IS A SALWAR KAMEEZ / SHALWAR KURTA ?

Simply put, a Salwar kameez (also spelled as Shalwar Kameez or Shalwar Qameez) is a traditional dress worn by the Asian women especially Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi. It is also called as Punjabi suit  or salwar suit or salwar kurta.

There are many variations and designs in the Salwar kameez. It has evolved from Ethnic dress to modern day fashion statement. All along its growth the salwar suit has have not lost its style quotient. It looks great on any body type and age group.

It is worn across the Indian sub-continent with much pride and love. It is basically a three part dress with the Top called the Kurta or Kameez, A Bottom or the Salwar and a dupatta / Odhni / Chunni. Comfort and Glamour are the words that describe the Shalwar kameez.

PARTS OR DIVISIONS OF SALWAR KAMEEZ?

Salwar kurta is generally divided in three parts:

1.The Top: Kurta / Kameez

2. The Bottom:  Salwar / Izaar

3. The Dupatta / Odhni / chunni / Chunaria

1. KURTA / KAMEEZ

The Kurta or Kameez is the top portion of the salwar kameez. It is usually the more decorated part and it can be called the heart of the dress. The smaller length kurtas are called kurtis. The Kameez can be given different looks by changing the height of the kurta, the Neckline, The Sleeves and Back look. There are many different types of Salwar Kameez suit like Anarkali, Kalidar and Floor Length Anarkali suit etc.

2. SALWAR / SHALWAR

The lower portion of salwar kameez is called Salwar / Shalwar (also known as Izaar / ijaar etc.) There are many variations of the salwar like the Churidar, Patiala, Trouser Type Salwar etc. Mostly for casual wear a loose and comfortable salwar is preferred and for occasions and festivals a tighter salwar style like churidar is preferred. Ofcourse there are regional preferences too.

3. DUPATTA

The third and the very important part of this dress is the dupatta. Previously it was  used to cover the head for decency and modesty but nowadays it is used a fashion statement. With different materials, works and prints, the duppata adds glamour and modesty to the dress.

WHAT ARE THE FABRICS USED IN SALWAR KAMEEZ?

Like most Ethnic Dresses the Salwar kameez too have their base in Handloom cotton. Later on with the arrival of new products the shalwar kameez is being manufactured in almost all available materials like Silk, Georgette, Chiffon, Net, Art-Silk, Brocade, Jacquard, Viscose etc.

The material used in salwar kameez depends on the occasion it is to be worn. Generally Cotton material is preferred for casual wear and more glamorous fabrics like Georgette, Silk etc. are preferred for festivals and occasions.
